Submissions

Submissions are due Sunday, August 18, 8 AM PDT. You can do one of the following:

  • Create a < 5 minute video showcasing your final product and sending it via Discord direct message to anyone with the @hackathon judge role before Sunday at 8 AM. We will then show the video live for you on Discord at 8 AM. This is a good option if you want to leave early.
  • Present your project live on a Discord call yourself for < 5 minutes Sunday at 8 AM.

Anyone has the option to watch the presentations live. As the time gets closer to 8 AM, we'll check in with each team to see how they're doing and how they want to showcase their work. After presentations, the judges will then deliberate and announce the winners.

Schedule

There will always be at least one @hackathon judge available in our Discord server to answer questions throughout the whole event.

Theme

To be released August 17, 8 AM PDT when the hackathon starts! It will not be specific like "games only", or "build a website", but something generic like "helping the environment", or "solving a problem in your community".

THEMES RELEASED! (plot twist, I chose three)

You can choose to go with any one of the three below. Covering more than one theme won't necessarily give you more points. Below each theme listing I put some bullet points of roughly what the theme is, however, be creative! If you can justify the reason your project abides by the theme, that works for us!

  • Data privacy and control/ownership
    • Empower users to manage, protect, and own their personal data.
    • Develop tools for encrypted storage or decentralized applications.
    • Ensure transparency in data usage and obtain clear user consent.
    • Focus on giving users control over their digital footprint and data privacy.
  • Gamification of learning
    • Make learning fun, interactive, and engaging for all ages.
    • Incorporate game mechanics like point scoring, badges, and leaderboards.
    • Design apps that reward progress and make learning feel like an adventure.
    • Create educational tools that are effective and enjoyable.
  • Healthy habits
    • Help users build and maintain positive routines in health and wellness.
    • Create habit trackers with reminders, rewards, and community support.
    • Offer personalized recommendations for fitness, nutrition, and mental wellness.
    • Focus on integrating healthy habits into daily life for long-term well-being.

Rules

  • Teams must consist of 1 or 2 participants only. Solo participants are welcome.
  • ChatGPT and other AI tools are allowed.
  • All code and assets must be created during the hackathon period. Use of pre-existing projects or templates is not allowed unless explicitly stated by a @hackathon judge. This rule does not extend to common libraries, frameworks, tools, or APIs. Basically, want to use React.js? Go for it. Want to use a pre-built React.js template you've custom-made? Ask us. If you're unsure if what you're doing is allowed, ask a judge.
  • Submissions must be made before the specified deadline. Late submissions may not be considered for judging.
  • No no-code tools. You must write code. This is a coding competition.
  • Plagiarism or any form of intellectual property infringement will result in immediate disqualification.
  • Participants retain intellectual property rights to their work. However, by participating, they grant the organizer a non-exclusive license to showcase and promote their project.
  • Nobody I've participated in a hackathon with before on the same team is allowed. This is to remain impartial, as I really want to judge.
  • By participating, participants agree to abide by these rules and any decisions made by the organizers. They are subject to change.
